The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 is introducing significant reforms that will dramatically impact your Medicare coverage for 2025. These changes are so substantial that insurance carriers have made dramatic changes to their plans. Both Stand Alone Drug Plans and Medicare Advantage Plans will see significant changes for 2025.
How the Part D Drug Program is changing...
Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Part D Coverage: Changes for 2025
Annual Cap on Drug Costs: A $2,000 limit on out-of-pocket expenses. This means that once your covered medications reach this threshold, your prescription drug expenses will be covered in full for the remainder of the year.
Closure of the Donut Hole: No more paying excessive amounts for medications. The "donut hole" is a coverage gap that can lead to significant out-of-pocket costs. In 2025 the donut hole no longer exists.
Monthly Drug Cost Distribution: Spread your costs over 12 months for better budgeting. This new option provides flexibility for those who struggle to afford their monthly prescription drug expenses. This means if you get hit with a large payment in January you can spread your costs over a 12 month period.
But these changes may impact your Plans for 2025:
Increasing premiums: Many, but not all, carriers are raising premiums to offset the increased costs associated with the IRA's reforms. Your out of pockets costs are being reduced on Part D Covered Medications , and the insurance carriers are required by the IRA to pick up the costs identifed in the Inflation Reduction Act.
Lowering benefits/Plans ending: Some carriers in order to remain profitable are reducing benefits on Medicare Advantage Plans, such as decreasing the number of covered services or increasing co-pays. Some carriers Like Aetna and Humana are eliminating many Medicare Advanatge Plans throughout the United States.
Discontinuing commission payments: Certain carriers are eliminating commission payments to insurance agents, like Golden Years. By eliminating insurance agent commissions, this may lead to reduced service and support for beneficiaries. Specifically Wellcare and Aetna have decided not pay commissions to insurance agents for Stand Alone Part D Plans.
